5 SEO Mistakes You Should Avoid

Applying the basics of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) will make you a good internet marketer. Knowing the advanced skills is a different story. Once you’ve mastered SEO, you will achieve greater heights and you could earn thousands of dollars per month. Believe it or not, there are a few people already earning millions per year on the Internet and SEO plays a huge part of that success.

In this post, I came up with some of the biggest SEO mistakes marketers make:

1. Producing duplicate content

This is very rampant among marketers, bloggers, and publishers worldwide. Did you know that as much as 50% of websites worldwide have issues regarding copied articles? Imagine how many people use duplicate content worldwide. That accounts for hundreds of thousands of websites!

Creating original content is not that hard. If your chosen niche is very clear to you, you will not have a hard time talking about it. So when creating a blog, always go for topics that are easy on your part or those that you truly understand.

2. Using broken internal links

Broken links are those “404 errors” whenever we click a link. That’s quite frustrating. You might lose your audience just because of broken links on your content. The easiest way to find broken links is to use a tool that tracks website performance. Google Analytics, for instance, will alert you via email if you have broken link details.

3. Missing meta description

It’s that snippet that comes out when your articles appear on search engines. We usually don’t bother editing them since they are not a big deal. But did you know that meta descriptions are important in optimizing SEO? Edit your meta description before hitting the publish button.

4. Sluggish response time

Have you checked your website’s current load time? You may do this via Pingdom or Google PageSpeed Insights. Before reaching out to your hosting provider due to slow website performance, it matters to check first whether you are using unnecessary plugins. Aside from plugins, here are some things that affect the speed of your blog:

-cache
-too much social sharing buttons
-themes/ templates
-your database

In case you did everything you can to speed up your website and nothing has changed, it is best to get a better web host or upgrade your plan if you haven’t.

5. Ineffective keyword research

I suggest that you begin by using a spreadsheet template. Evernote is also a good choice since you can create a table in the note section. Once you gathered your topics, it’s time to go to sites such as Quora and BoardReader for keyword ideas. There are so many keyword planners out there that can be used for free, such as the Google Keyword Planner, UberSuggest, and Keyword Eye. On the paid version, the best tools are Moz, Semrush, and WordStream.

As you could see, some of the SEO mistakes are more on the technical aspect. But there are things that are under your control. That includes creating great content and producing quality images.
